Class Update - September 29th

Hola a todos,

I hope you all had a good week. This week we dedicated some time to learn more about the impact of residential schools across Canada, the importance of Orange T-Shirt Day and what actions can we take to reconcile and live in harmony. Students had multiple opportunities to engage in traditional ways of knowing and doing. 

This Week in Review

  • ELAL – We reviewed the vocabulary of the first chapters of Amal Unbound by Aisha Saaed, including Urdu words.
  • Math – We finished looking at place value up to a million.
  • Social and Art – We examined histories related to the National Day of Truth and Reconciliation and completed a collaborative art work with Sra. Dominguez´s class.
  • Science – We learnt about the different factors that influence weather and started looking at air temperature indoor and outdoor.
  • Spanish – We finished the first draft of our autobiography.

Next week we will continue learning about our people and making connections to the land.

Class Update - September 27

 Hola familias,


In Physical Education we played Line Tag, a Blackfoot traditional game that ¨was played so children could develop skills such as running, chasing and balancing¨ (Conseil scolaire francophone de la Colombie-Britannique).

 The Week Ahead

  • ELAL – We will review the vocabulary and summary writing before starting the reading of Amal Unbound by Aisha Saaed.
  • Math – We will do estimation and rounding.
  • Social – We will be examining histories related to the National Day of Truth and Reconciliation.
  • Science – We are learning about the different factors that influence weather as well as making observations and predictions about the weather.
  • Spanish – We will be writing our own autobiography.

School and Parent Society Updates

School

On Thursday, September 29, Dalhousie will recognize the National Day for Truth & Reconciliation by wearing orange shirts. Students will also be engaging in learning around Indigenous Ways of Knowing and Being. There is no school on Friday, September 30.

Our Apple Fundraiser is underway! Place your orders with the forms sent home by September 28. Cheques or e-transfers are accepted! 

Our Fall Harvest Fundraiser allows you to get some fresh produce.  Please visit https://store.indeygo.com/fundraisers/dalhousie-school-fall-harvest-fundraiser/. Donations can also be made to the Foodbank! What a great opportunity to double up on helping out! 

The next fun lunches are Fat Burger and Mucho Burrito. Get your orders in by Friday, September 23 at midnight on healthyhunger.ca  All restaurants are up until the end of December so feel free to order for any of the weeks.

September 22 Update

¡Hola Familias!


This Week in Review

  • ELAL – We started the study of the novel Amal Unbound by Aisha Saaed.
  • Math – We did a math challenge about number sense and place value.
  • Social – We worked on latitude and longitude using Google Earth while mapping Canada.
  • Science – We learned more about the three main climate zones, tropical, temperate and artic, and sub-types.
  • Spanish – We are practicing different uses of the verb ESTAR (to be) in present tense.

We did an excellent job raising fund for this worthy cause last year and we want to continue to support Terry Fox organization. As a school, we are hoping to raise $4000.00 this year. We have already achieved half of our goal!

September 20th Update

Hello everyone!

The Week Ahead

  • ELAL – We are starting the study of the novel Amal Unbound by Aisha Said.
  • Math – Place Value up to a million (standard, expanded, pictorially, and written form)
  • Social – Mapping Canada – Building geographical skills (latitude and longitude)
  • Science – We continue learning the differences between whether and climate. Our students have planned a backpacking trip to Positano, Italy; Alabama, US; Nagasaki, Japan, among others, and learned how the whether compares to Calgary, Alberta.
  • Spanish – Different uses of the verb ESTAR (to be) in present tense.

September 16th Update

¡Hola familias!

The grade 5 students understand the importance of leading by example. As such, they have begun practicing running to be the leaders of the Terry Fox run that will take place on September 26th. Following Terry Fox example of hope and perseverance, student also set up their goals for this school year.

This Week in Review

  • Math – We got to play jeopardy to practice place value!
  • ELA – We learned about the importance of brainstorming and storytelling as initial steps in the process of writing. We started looking into the elements of personal narrative writing. 
  • Social Studies – What is a region? We got to learn about Canada’s physical regions and its features. 
  • Spanish – We are learning how to use the verb “SER” in the right context. Next week, we will start looking at the verb “ESTAR.”
  • Science – We completed our backpacking trip plan to our favoUrite city in the world and the best time to travel given its weather and climate conditions. Through presentations, we learned that:
    • January is the best month to visit Washington, DC if you want to try the Outdoor Skate Rinks!
    • Caracas is surrounded by mountains and it only has drought and rainy seasons.
    • It rains a lot in London but rarely snows! A rain jacket is a must regardless of the time of the year you plan to visit.
    • September is a popular time to travel to either Tokyo or Paris. Despite the rain or typhoons, the weather is generous and there are many activities to do outdoor. 
    • Spring is a good time to go to Hawaii as it is not too hot and not too cold!
    • If you plan to visit Moscow, perhaps consider going in May as the weather is similar to Calgary.

SCHOOL UPDATE

On Monday, September 19, Dalhousie School will observe a moment of silence in to mark the passing of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II. All CBE School and workplaces will remain open as scheduled.

Please see the separate email that was sent regarding Parent Teacher Interviews, which will be held on Thursday, September 22 and Friday, September 23. The conference booking application is currently experience technical issues and you may not be able to book at the initially indicated time.  We thank you for your patience.

Due to Parent Teacher Interviews, there is no school for all students on Friday, September 23.  It is a full day of school for all students, including Tuesday/Thursday Kindergarten students on Thursday, September 22.

Dalhousie students and families will be participating in the annual Terry Fox run. The run will be held at the school on September 26 at 1:45 PM. Donations can be made online to the Terry Fox foundation under Dalhousie School. Students are also encouraged to bring a Toonie for Terry on the day of the run. 

School photos will take place on September 27 for the Tuesday/Thursday Kindergarten group, Grades 1, 3 and 5. On September 28, the Monday/Wednesday Kindergarten group as well as Grades 2 and 4 will have their pictures taken. Please note that it will be the individual as well as the class photos. A retake date will be confirmed.

September 9th Update

 Feliz viernes a todas las familias!

Today, we had our Welcome Back assembly -the first one in the last three years! KUDOS to all of the students who volunteered to read the Land Acknowledgement and to be on stage doing the chicken dance. Thank you all for showing your best behaviour.

September 6th

Hola a todos,

This week we are starting to review previous knowledge, such as number sense in Math. We did math puzzles to go over addition, subtraction and multiplication. As we start getting back into our school routine, students are being constantly encouraged to build on their leadership skills. They are very enthusiastic about being role models for the younger students and also taking on class responsibilities. Today, they got to fill out a "job application" for the many positions we have available to help in the classroom. Thank you all for completing your "job application"!

“Great start of the school year”

 Hello everyone,

Feliz regreso a clases! We had a “great start of the school year,” as A.J. said. These past two days, we went over school expectations and safety procedures. We also created the class’ golden rule and did some fun activities to get to know each other. These posters summarize what we talked about in class. Check them out!
